AEO & GEO: How to Get Recommended by AI

People now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews instead of scrolling results. Here is how to get recommended by AI, step by step.

Search is changing shape. A growing share of your customers now type a full question into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews and act on the single answer they get back. If you want to get recommended by AI, ranking on page one is no longer enough: the model has to understand your brand, trust it and choose to name it. This guide covers what AEO and GEO are, how AI decides who to cite, and the exact changes we make for clients in Lucknow and beyond.

SEO, AEO and GEO: what each one does

The three overlap, but they solve different problems.

  • ✦SEO (Search Engine Optimization) gets your pages ranking in the classic list of results. It is still the foundation, because AI models read the same pages Google ranks.
  • ✦AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) shapes your content so it is chosen as the direct answer: featured snippets, 'People also ask' boxes, voice assistants and Google's AI Overviews.
  • ✦GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes your brand easy for AI models to understand, verify and cite when they write an answer from scratch in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot.

In practice you do all three at once. The same page can rank, win the snippet and get quoted by an assistant, if it is written and structured for it.

How AI decides which brands to recommend

An AI assistant does not keep a list of 'best agencies' or 'best restaurants'. When someone asks, it combines what it already knows with what it can fetch in real time, then writes an answer naming the businesses that appear most clearly and most consistently. Three signals matter more than anything else:

  1. 1Clarity: pages that state plainly what you do, for whom, where and at what price, in the first few lines.
  2. 2Consistency: the same name, services, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Conflicting facts make a model cautious.
  3. 3Corroboration: mentions on sources the model already trusts, such as reviews, news sites, industry directories and community forums.

Notice that none of these are tricks. The model is trying to give a useful answer, and the brands that make that easy are the ones it reaches for.

  1. 1Answer the question in the first two sentences of every page, then go deeper. Models lift the opening lines.
  2. 2Write headings the way people ask. 'How much does a Shopify store cost in India?' beats 'Pricing'.
  3. 3Add structured data. Organization, Service, FAQ and Product schema tell a machine exactly who you are and what you sell.
  4. 4Build a real FAQ on every service page, with honest, specific answers of two to four sentences each.
  5. 5Publish an llms.txt file: a plain-text summary of your business that AI crawlers read directly. This site has one at /llms.txt.
  6. 6Earn mentions where models look: Google reviews, Justdial and IndiaMART listings, local news, LinkedIn posts and the forums your industry actually uses.
  7. 7Keep your facts identical everywhere, down to the spelling of your brand name and the format of your phone number.

How to measure it

You cannot manage what you do not track. Once a month, put the ten questions your customers actually ask into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and note which brands get named, in what order, and which source is linked. We run this for clients the same way we run rank tracking. It shows movement within weeks of structural fixes, much faster than classic SEO ever did.

What this looks like for a Lucknow business

A restaurant, a clinic or a coaching institute in Lucknow is competing for questions like 'best dentist near Gomti Nagar' or 'top CLAT coaching in Lucknow'. Most competitors have no FAQ, no schema and inconsistent listings, so the bar is low. A clean Google Business Profile, a service page that answers the question in its first line, and twenty genuine reviews are often enough to become the brand an assistant names first.

None of this replaces good SEO; it builds on it. The brands that win AI search over the next few years are the ones that started structuring for it now. If you want to know what AI says about your business today, ask us for a free GEO audit and we will send you the exact answers it gives, word for word.

Before you ask

Questions about this one

No. AEO and GEO sit on top of SEO: the same strong pages, structured so an answer engine can quote them. Rankings still matter; they are just no longer the only place people find you.

Ask them. Put the questions your customers would ask into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and see who gets named. We track those answers for clients month to month, the way you would track rankings.

Organization, FAQ and Product schema first. They tell a model who you are, what you answer and what you sell. This article page carries FAQ schema itself, which is a good example of it.

Faster than classic SEO, because models re-read the web often, but it is not instant. Structure and consistency come first, then mentions on sources the models already trust. Most clients see their first citations within four to eight weeks.
