The 3-Second Rule: Hooks That Stop the Scroll

On Reels and TikTok you don't have 30 seconds to make your point — you have three. Here's how we write openings people can't swipe past.

Every feed is an endless contest for attention, and the first three seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest of your video. Great content with a weak opening simply doesn’t get watched.

Hooks that work (and why)

  • The pattern break — open on motion, a strange angle or an unexpected sound so the brain stops autopiloting.
  • The bold claim — say the most surprising true thing first, then prove it.
  • The open loop — ask a question the viewer needs answered (“Most brands get this wrong…”).
  • The mirror — show your audience their exact problem in the very first frame.

Make the hook visual, not just verbal

Most people scroll with the sound off. Put your hook on screen as text, cut fast, and make the first frame interesting on its own.

Test like a scientist

Film three different openings for the same video and let the numbers pick the winner. Small changes to the first three seconds often do more than reshooting everything that follows.
